Stewart Morrison Insurance has been serving people in the Kawarthas, Durham, and Peterborough since establishment in 1971 by Stewart Morrison. The first office was located in Sunderland; growing throughout the years into a leading regional insurance services provider with 5 branch offices, and over 30 staff.

Over the years the company has grown from being primarily a supplier of insurance for local farmers and families, to a regional supplier of insurance of all lines of insurance including Home, Auto, Business, Farm, Municipal, Not-For-Profit, Life, and much more.

Now with five offices located in communities within Durham Region, Peterborough County, and the City of Kawartha Lakes the company is poised for continued growth.

Stewart Morrison was the founder of this company; a farmer first, he believed in hard work, long hours and having a little fun. He believed his customers deserved the best. He taught that to his daughter Marlene Morrison Nicholls, who joined him in the business in 1976. Marlene has lead the company for the last 40 years, building on these values, bringing a small insurance agency to a large brokerage that now owns and operates several local offices, with a staff that rises above the crowd in expertise and technical ability. Her husband Ken Nicholls, is a partner in life and in the business. His expertise in Farm and Business insurance along with his IT knowledge keeps this brokerage cutting edge.

Ken joined Stewart Morrison Insurance in 1989, obtaining his Registered Insurance Brokers license earlier that year. As a brokerage owner, he is responsible for personal, farm, and commercial business development and is dedicated to new initiatives and service in this area. Ken serves as Administrator for the company’s IT system, which is considered leading edge in the industry. He holds a Chartered Insurance Professional (C.I.P.) designation from the Insurance Institute of Canada and a Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) designation from the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario.
Ken is active throughout the communities we serve.

Stewart Morrison Insurance has insured generations of families and clients and have second and third generation staff as well. Emily Avery-Graves, 3rd generation, leads Business Development and is an expert in Claims management & Specialty lines of insurance. This shows the commitment they each have to the people that they serve.

Our History

1961

Stewart Morrison started career in insurance.

1971

Stewart Morrison Insurance established,
opens in Sunderland sharing an office with Ronald J. Swain, Barrister.

1972

Sunderland office opens full time.

1974

Purchased full time office at River St. in Sunderland,
next to the grocery store - electronic typewriters
were first utilized.

1975

Woodville office opened in the old butcher shop on Main Street.

1976

Marlene Morrison Nicholls 
officially joins SMI.

1980

Lindsay office opens at 29 Cambridge Street
with first computer processor - exciting!

1981

Agents became self-regulated and became brokers.

1989

158 Lindsay St. South undergoes major renovations lead by
Ken Nicholls and becomes our Head Office.

Ken Nicholls officially joins SMI.

1998

SMI becomes fully automated with the implementation
of Agency Manager TAM-BMS.

2003

Stewart the Bear joins the team.

2004

Sunderland office moves out onto Hwy 12
with the purchase of the Ross Doble property.

2006

SMI wins the prestigious Lindsay & District Chamber
of Commerce Customer Service Award.

2006

SMI partners with Lindsay Fire Department to purchase a 
Sparky SMART Car, sharing safety with our community.

2008

Introduction of the THINK BLUE campaign.

2008

Marlene wins the Lindsay & District Chamber of
Commerce's Business Leader-of-the-Year Award.

2009

Emily Avery-Graves joins SMI, carrying on the family
tradition as Business Development Manager.

2011

Stewart Morrison passes.

2012

SMI opens a new satellite office in Bobcaygeon.

2013

SMI Purchases Palmer Insurance in Fenelon Falls.

2014

Major fire at SMI Lindsay: never missed a call and were set up
and fully operational at the mall in less than a week.

2014

SMI opens their new Port Perry office.

2014

Sunderland office amalgamates with Port Perry office.

2014

Grand Opening in Fenelon Falls, a brand new look and a bright future.

2015

SMI returns to the the Lindsay office (after the fire).

2015

LDCC marketing excellence award.

2016

LDCC design excellence award.

2017

Marlene wins the Woman Resources Award for
Extraordinary Woman in Business.

2018

SMI celebrates inclusivity.

2019

SMI wins KLTW Platinum Broker of the year,
