Our legacy

1971

Stewart Morrison Insurance has been serving people in the Kawarthas since it was established in 1971 by Stewart Morrison. Since the opening of its first office located in Sunderland, Stewart Morrison Insurance has matured into a leading regional insurance services provider.
Over the years the company has evolved from being primarily a supplier of insurance for local farmers and families, to a regional supplier of insurance for municipalities, not-for-profits, and businesses as well. Now with five offices located in communities within Durham Region, Peterborough County, and the City of Kawartha Lakes the company is poised for continued growth.

The company's recent introduction of new products and its foray into the Peterborough market is a sign of their confidence in the marketplace and their own capacity to service an ever-expanding clientele.

Stewart Morrison Insurance established, opens in Sunderland sharing an office with Ronald J. Swain, Barrister.

1972

Sunderland office opens full time.

1974

Purchased full time office at River St. in Sunderland, next to the grocery store - electronic typewriters were first utilized.

1975

Woodville office opened in the old butcher shop on Main Street.

1976

Marlene Morrison Nicholls officially joins SMI.

1980

Lindsay office opens at 29 Cambridge Street with first computer processor - exciting!

1981

Agents became self-regulated and became brokers.

1989

158 Lindsay St. South undergoes major renovations lead by Ken Nicholls and becomes our Head Office.

Ken Nicholls officially joins SMI.

1998

SMI becomes fully automated with the implementation of Agency Manager TAM-BMS.

2003

Stewart the Bear joins the team.

2004

Sunderland office moves out onto Hwy 12 with the purchase of the Ross Doble property.

2006

SMI wins the prestigious Lindsay & District Chamber of Commerce Customer Service Award.

2006

SMI partners with Lindsay Fire Department to purchase a Sparky SMART Car, sharing safety with our community.

2008

Introduction of the THINK BLUE campaign.

Marlene wins the Lindsay & District Chamber of Commerce's Business Leader-of-the-Year Award

Emily Avery-Graves joins SMI, carrying on the family tradition as Business Development Manager.

2011

Stewart Morrison passes.

2012

SMI opens a new satellite office in Bobcaygeon.

SMI Purchases Palmer Insurance in Fenelon Falls

2014

Major fire at SMI Lindsay: never missed a call and were set up and fully operational at the mall in less than a week.

SMI opens their new Port Perry office.

Sunderland office amalgamates with Port Perry office.
